Oswego N.Y. – The Richardson-Bates House Museum officially opened for the 2026 season on April 2, marking a year of significant milestones as the Oswego County Historical Society celebrates its 80th anniversary of ownership of the historic home along with the 130th anniversary of the founding of our historical society. Concurrent with local celebrations we are also celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation.

“We are happy to welcome people to help us celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Oswego Historical Society taking ownership of the majestic Richardson-Bates House Museum,” said OCHS President Eva Corradino.

Visitors are invited to explore the museum’s period rooms on the first floor and city/county exhibits on the second floor, offering both longtime residents and new visitors a deeper look into Oswego’s rich history. For many in the community who have not visited since childhood, the museum offers a renewed experience with intriguing stories and perspectives to discover.

New for the 2026 season, the museum is highlighting artwork researched and curated by Michael Parks, a volunteer researcher with the OCHS and an adjunct faculty member at the Pratt Munson in Utica, New York. One featured watercolor painting, dating back to the late 19th century, has drawn particular interest due to its exceptional condition.

“Michael Parks, who contributed to this exhibit, was drawn to this painting and noted its remarkable condition,” said Volunteer Coordinator Mary Kay Stone. “I initially thought it had been donated from the offices of the Oswego Starch Company, but Michael pointed out that the condition was so well preserved that it likely had never been on display, especially in an office where smoking was common.” Further research led Parks and Stone to explore a potential connection between the piece and 1893 Chicago’s World’s Fair. “I knew Kingsford Starch had an exhibit there, but it took a long time to find a picture of their booth.” Stone added.

The Oswego County Historical Society seeks to interpret its collections to connect the community to past, present and future topics relevant to local history, and to promote a public interest in Oswego County’s historical resources. The Richardson-Bates House Museum will be open Thursdays through Saturdays, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m now through December 19, 2026. The museum is located at 135 E. 3rd Street in Oswego. Admission rates will remain the same as 2025,  beginning at $12 for adults, with discounts available for seniors, students, and children. This includes a guided 1- hour tour of the museum. Researchers wishing to schedule a research consultation or use the research library are encouraged to call and make a research appointment or fill out a request form on our website.
