OSWEGO – In loving memory of our friend and colleague, Dr. Robert A. Berkley PT/DPT of Robert Berkley Physical Therapy, Dr. Shweta Singh PT/DPT, the owner of Sage Physical Therapy in Oswego NY, has partnered with Oswego County Historical Society to sponsor local community events, specifically the Historical Society’s Retro Movie Night and Classic Movie Night events.
Retro Movie Night, held annually in the spring, features films that revive the recent past. This year’s selection, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” is a fitting selection for this new partnership. Dr. Andrea Vickery, historical society board member and former patient of Dr. Berkley remembers Berkley’s personality, charm and shining smile – not unlike the charm of Harrison Ford’s Dr. Indiana Jones. In 1981, audiences were hopeful for a sequel, as noted in Arthur Night’s original Hollywood Reporter review. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” did spawn a franchise of action-packed films including memorable new and returning characters. Certainly, that hope of a bright future is seen in Dr. Singh and her continued commitment to the community with her new practice and sponsorship of events like Retro Movie Night.
Selecting “Raiders of the Lost Ark”
Arthur Night’s original June 1981 review in The Hollywood Reporter noted, “It’s the thrills that keep it moving. From the opening reel, in which Ford is thwarted by Freeman in his attempt to retrieve a golden idol from an ingeniously booby-trapped South American cave, the action just never lets up.” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is doubly fun given its 1930s setting. “There isn’t a more exciting movie to watch on the big screen with a group of your friends than ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’,” says Carleen Palmitesso, Retro Move Night committee member and volunteer. “We can’t resist cheering as he races through the jungle, dodging poison darts, to escape in the seaplane, or hangs under the speeding Nazi truck to rescue the Ark.” Dr. Candis Haak, historical society board member, reminds us with a laugh that “‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ is such a fun film, but it’s not an instructional guide on how to be an archeologist.”
Harrison Ford recently won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild. Although “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was not his first film, it was his first leading role and established him as a reliable action hero. Other dramatic and comic roles cemented his legacy as one of the most important actors of our time. The role of Marion Ravenwood played by Karen Allen was a breakthrough for strong independent women characters for its time. She could hold her own In a drinking contest with a Nepal man or with the seductive Nazi archeologist.
Tickets for Retro Movie Night may be purchased in advance at the theatre, Rivers End Bookstore (19 West Bridge Street), or by calling the museum at 315-343-1342. If the event doesn’t sell out, limited tickets may be available at the door starting approximately 30 minutes before the 7:00 p.m. screening.
